While packing your bags, it might be useful to take into account the following tips:
VISA & DOCUMENTATION: A valid passport is required. Its expiration date cannot be less than six months after the date of arrival to Venezuela.
In addition, it is necessary to fill a visa form provided during the flight, before arriving in the country. Said form must be return upon departure.
VACCINATIONS: These are not necessary for staying at Los Roques.
TIME DIFFERENCE: Five hours less than Central European time (6 in wintertime).
WEATHER: Sunny, dry, windy. Trade winds blow 365 days a year. Rain is scarce, virtually non-existent.
Nevertheless, short rainy seasons are possible during November and December.
Thanks to the privileged geographic location of Los Roques, no tropical storms or hurricanes are reported to have hit the archipelago.
Average temperature: Air 28° (82.4 F) - Water 26° (78.8 F).
LANGUAGE: The country's official language is Spanish, although Italian and English are also spoken.
CURRENCY: Venezuelan Bolivar is the national currency, although American Dollars are widely accepted.
An estimated exchange rate is 750 Bolívares for 1 Dollar.
RATES: Flight fares from Caracas to Gran Roque cost approximately VEB $1,000. Entrance to Los Roques Archipelago National Park costs some VEB $ 10,000 per foreigner, VEB $5,000 per Venezuelan and VEB $ 2,500 per each child under 12 years of age. Admission is totally free for people above 65. Exit taxes from Venezuela are around 35 USD.
TIPS: Tips are not compulsory. Nevertheless, it is usual to pay a 10% tip, mostly at restaurants and for receiving services.
PAYING METHOD: For your supplementary expenses, the posada accepts: cash (either in bolívares or dollars), travelers checks and credit card (American Express, VISA, Master Card).
POWER SUPPLY: Voltage is 110, with US plugs. If you are coming from Europe, you may wish to bring an adaptor.
FIXED TELEPHONY: At the posada, there is a telephone for outgoing international calls. Public phones can also be found in town.
MOBILE TELEPHONY: TELCEL and MOVILNET operators have installed AMPS Analogue and CDMA digital systems in Los Roques. DIGITEL, Venezuelan GSM (900 Hz) operator, is not yet present in Los Roques.
LUGGAGE: We strongly advise you to bring flexible, light luggage with you, given that the maximum allowed weight for a Caracas-Los Roques flight is 10 kg. per person. Extremely heavy or voluminous baggage is under the risk of not being embarked due to the limited cargo capacity of the planes. It is important to bear in mind that the Simón Bolívar International Airport does not offer luggage lockers.
CLOTHING: We recommend you to bring fresh, light and casual wear, plus sunglasses, caps or hats, a raincoat for the boat trip and sandals.
MEDICINES: Gran Roque has a medical practitioner and a small pharmacy, although it is recommended not to forget personal medicines.
SUN PROTECTION: It is indispensable to pack solar lotions with high protection, with a minimum of 15 SPF. Sunscreens are ever better. After-sun lotions and lip balms are also recommended. They can also be bought at the island.
